Merleau-Ponty: Style, Truth, and the Privilege of Language

We must recognize under the name of the glance, hand, and in general body, a system of systems committed to the inspection of the world, capable of covering distances…of designing hollows and reliefs, distances and detours, a meaning in the inconceivable barrenness of being.  The movement of the artist tracing his arabesque in infinite matter amplifies but also continues the simple marvel of directed locomotion and gestures of grasping.
